Healthy and Strong

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

This cartoon is dedicated to one of my closest friends who had an open heart surgery today.
We are very thankful that he woke up healthy and strong after the surgery.

Drama of the scientific manuscripts!
After several rejections, after several changes of the approach, after redoing the experiments and after new results, do you know what they talk about when we are not there?

Alternative splicing problem

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

Thanks to Dr. Ece Gamsiz for her cartoon idea!

Info for non-science readers
Alternative splicing is a process by which the exons of the RNA produced by transcription of a gene are reconnected in multiple ways during RNA splicing. The resulting different mRNAs may be translated into different protein isoforms; thus, a single gene may code for multiple proteins. There are numerous modes of alternative splicing observed, of which the most common is exon skipping. In this mode, a particular exon may be included in mRNAs under some conditions or in particular tissues, and omitted from the mRNA in others.

The entire atmosphere of the lab changes with the PI

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

The mood of the lab depends on PI's character very strongly. If you have a fun, responsible, cheerful PI, then you are a very lucky researcher. It is great to work in such an environment.

I don't want to make a sentence about the opposite character but as you can imagine, unfortunately it will be very tough to survive and work.

Please do not leave the lab timer all alone!

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

Lab timers that we forget to turn off. Lab timers that keep beeping for hours (OK! I exaggerated)...Please do not leave the lab timer all alone! (Some of them have short arms, they can't turn off themselves.)

Postdocs: Are they post post graduate students?

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

Don't treat postdocs like students.  They are trainee but they are not graduate student anymore!

A naive question

[please click on the comic for higher resolution]

Info for non-science readers
In demonstrations of semi-permeable membranes, a solution containing several types of molecules, usually glucose and starch, is placed into a semi-permeable dialysis bag, such as a cellulose membrane with pores, and the bag is sealed with a knot or elastic band. The sealed dialysis bag is placed in a container of a different solution, or water. More on Wikipedia
